The Bungo school was one of the earliest, beginning with Bungo Sadahide and his son Yukihira in the Heian period. This group continued working into shinto times when this wakizashi by Bungo Yukinaga was forged. This sword has a very well done gonome midare hamon in ko-nie deki. The jihada is itame with chikei. The nakago is ubu and signed 'Bungo no Kuni Ju Fujiwara Yukinaga'. This very nice shinto wakizashi is in older polish in which all the workmanship can be seen and enjoyed. The habaki is of good quality two piece solid silver construction and the shirasaya is accented with ivory hatomei.
